The Rohingya are a stateless people and one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, but their struggle has been largely forgotten.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is calling for Australians to #VoteForHumanity in May 2022 and to ask our leaders to address their plight.

Working in the Central Mediterranean since 2015, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams continue to bear witness to an unacceptable and preventable loss of life on Europe’s borders. 

Australian communications manager Eloise Liddy and Belgian psychologist Hager Saadallah both recently worked on board our search and rescue ship, Geo Barents. 

Nurse Jacob Coleman, from Brisbane, was recently working with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) as part of a team responding to COVID-19 in Mosul, Iraq. He shares his experience working in the intensive care unit (ICU), advice for other nurses, and his belief in equal access to healthcare for all people. 

Following devastating flash floods on 11 April, the scale of damage to water, sanitation and sewage treatment systems in KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini Municipality is now clear.

To mitigate outbreaks of water-borne diseases, MSF mobile medical teams are consulting daily in the many halls, churches, tents and schools that serve as temporary shelters. These teams are supported by four MSF health promoters who walk the surrounding communities sharing information about water quality issues and risks, and connecting individuals left traumatised by the floods to MSF counsellors.

For over five decades, ever since Israel occupied the Palestinian Territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinian people have experienced continued and repeated traumas.  

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Kharkiv, the second largest city in the country, has been severely affected by the Russian offensive. While many fled the conflict, those who stayed have taken refuge in underground stations to escape the incessant bombing.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are offering primary healthcare consultations in several stations. 

“The severity, scale and speed of the war in Ukraine have created simply enormous needs and suffering,” says Dr Joanne Liu, an experienced paediatrician and member of MSF’s emergency response team who is just back from Ukraine.

On the morning of Friday 1 April, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) finalised our first medical train transfer of patients in Ukraine.

Nine patients in serious but stable condition were transferred from a hospital in Zaporizhzhia, in the southeast of the country, to major referral hospitals in Lviv, on a dedicated medical 2-carriage train that MSF has developed together with the Ukrainian Railways. The patients were accompanied by a team of nine MSF medical staff.
