Crisis summary

The increase in intensity of the Israeli bombing and the geographical expansion in recent weeks has led to massive displacement, with many families displaced for several times. More than a million people are reported to be displaced in the country and more than 1,900 have already been killed, according to the authorities—surpassing the Israel-Lebanon war in 2006. 

Gaza

As many as 1.9 million people in Gaza—90 per cent of the population—are estimated to be forcibly displaced and living in unsafe, unhealthy conditions. There is no safe place in Gaza.

Sudan

Since 15 April 2023, intense fighting has been taking place between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF—the military forces of the Republic of the Sudan) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF—a powerful paramilitary group) in the capital Khartoum and other parts of Sudan

Haiti

Since the assassination of the Haitian President Jovenel Moïse nearly three years ago, the people of the capital Port-au-Prince have been struggling to survive as armed gangs, police, and civilian self-defense brigades fight in the streets of the city.

Russian forces launched attacks on multiple cities in late February 2022. More than nine million people have fled to neighbouring countries since the war began, with an additional six million currently displaced within Ukraine.

With US and NATO forces withdrawing from the country, Afghan forces and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan—also known as the Taliban—have been fighting for territory in clashes have claimed thousands of lives while crippling public infrastructure. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan took control of the country in August 2021.

Asylum seekers and refugees have been held on Nauru and Papua New Guinea since July 2013, with still no end in sight. They have faced years of various forms of detention, uncertainty about the future and a lack of control over even the basic details of their lives. 

Rohingya

Since the late 1970s, the Rohingya people, considered “stateless” under international law, have faced persecution in Myanmar, with escalating targeted campaigns forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
